Hiatus!

Just a short Hiatus here at Effect 37 while I wait for a brand new Alienware system to arrive.  Also, I'm likely looking into a swap to a "real" domain, so I can get the layout the way I really want it (rather than having to break it up into multiple blogger pages.)

I'll keep you up to date, thanks for the patience!

Jon Stewart Shows the Warpublican Hypocrisy

Ah, the absolute genius of Jon Stewart and Steven Colbert. In this particular instance in Reflections today, we have the former totally showing, on film, with no debate possible, the hypocrisy of the Warpublican party. Rove, O'Reilly and Hannity... oh, if only he had included some of Rush Limburger's infinite pool of lies. Still, this is a must watch for those wishing to be informed in this most critical of elections.

Well the lies have wrapped up in the Twin Cities, and the Bush twin has had his say. Now it's time to educate yourself on the spin that was performed as only Warpublicans know how to do.

Prince: Fighting For Artist Rights, and Suffering Abuses

The internet (and now mainstream media) are jumping on the bandwagon of a recent story- the breaking of copyright law by a woman on YouTube, inappropriately using a Prince song in a video of her dancing babies. Seems harmless enough, you say? No harm done? And by Prince's companies sending DMCA takedowns, he's being a bully?

Wrong, you are.

Become educated on the matter here:

A Shave and a Haircut... Worthy of Revenge?

Every so often, live television provides a moment that transcends the rest of its best moments. More often than not, it's when someone creative does something unexpected.

In this case... well, there's a casualty. One cool haircut, for the cost of television comedy gold.

The Effect 37 "Stubborn" IQ Quiz!

Hopefully if you've arrived at this post, you have been sent here from quiz questions elsewhere on the web to get some answers and see how you've done! I'll repeat the questions here in case you've stumbled onto this directly. If you haven't seen the quiz yet, try not to look at the answers before coming up with your own answer first!

This "IQ" quiz (and I use that term loosely) is to test what you think you know against what is actual truth- and how stubborn you are in being willing to change your thinking in the future!

This is all on the honor system- no automatic grading here... Be honest with yourself- how else can you become a better person? =D

1.) In biblical concepts, what is "the number of the beast"?

"Stubborn" Answer to #1.) 666, dude! It's the devil's digits!

Factual Answer to #1.) 616. Researchers recently discovered that 666 was a mistranslation based on recent documents found. In fact, 666 was a reference to Nero, not the number of the beast. The actual number of the beast has been determined to be 616.

Don't believe me? Here's proof.

2.) In what year did the most recent new millennium start?

"Stubborn" Answer to #2.) 2000, dude! We partied like it was 1999, and rang in the new millennium when we flipped to 2000- no more "1" in front- that means it's a new millennium obviously!

Factual Answer to #2.) 2001. This greatly confuses people, but consider this... Count to ten. Wait- what was that first number you just said? *1*. You did not start counting to ten with *0*.

Don't believe me? Here's proof.

3.) How many sides does a stop sign have?

"Stubborn" Answer to #3.) 8, duh! It's an octagon!

Factual Answer to #3.) 10. What? You disagree? I dare you deny it: 8 sides for the 8 edges, and the front side and the back side. You see- a stop sign is a 3 dimensional object. Therefore, the front and the back are in fact a side! The only way "8" is the correct answer to this question is if you ask how many sides a stop sign *shape* has- drawn on paper, it would of course only have 8.

4.) What did the legendary musician Prince change his name to in the 90's?

"Stubborn" Answer to #4.) He changed it to this weird symbol and he was going by "The Artist" or "The Artist Formerly Known as Prince".

Factual Answer to #4.) Prince changed his name to his logo, which was an *unpronounceable* symbol (combining the male and female symbols with a horn flourish). The symbol has no name, period. Prince never called himself "The Artist" or "The Artist Formerly Known As Prince". The media, not able to deal with a person with no pronounceable name, landed upon the lengthy moniker- to which Prince latched on as a humorous result of the social experiment aspect of his name change.

The reason for Prince's name change was purely a brilliant business move. Warner Brothers was trying to stifle Prince through their contract, and he found the loophole- the contract said "Prince" couldn't do certain things. Therefore, just as a band changes their name, Prince changed his- able to do whatever he desired under his new silent moniker free of Warner Brother's meddling.

To be accurate, when referring to his albums over the years, you should not mix the use of "Prince" with the use of the symbol. For instance, the classic "The Gold Experience" albums was performed by O(+>, not Prince!

5.) What's wrong with the following sentence? ... "Your stupid!", the teenager said to another kid he was not fond of.

"Stubborn" Answer to #5.) Everyone knows (that paid attention in school) that you shouldn't end a sentence with a preposition! So, that sentence should read... "Your stupid!", the teenager said to another kid of which he was not fond.

Factual Answer to #5.) Bravo on getting one part right- of course you shouldn't end sentences with a preposition, so your fix is indeed a solution. But you probably missed the other mistake that is far, far worse! (I'm hoping you didn't!)

For the last time, people: "Your" is possessive. "You're" is short for "You are". It is NEVER correct to use "Your" in substitute for "You're". Saying "Your stupid" is not a complete sentence! You are trying to say "You are stupid!". If you use "your", you're trying to say something about the "stupid" someone has or owns- which makes NO sense whatsoever!

Learn your Your/You're skills! (And don't forget to brush up on their/they're/there while you're at it!)

So how'd you do? Did you discover you've had a stubborn mindset all along? Well, look- if you're unaware of the answers in the first place, that's not quite being stubborn, is it?

The question is- now that you know... will you continue to use the wrong answers? If so, then in fact you've failed the "stubborn" quiz! Shame on you!

Prepare to Experience Effect 37!

Welcome!

I was in the process of working on a new blog theme recently when T.S. (that's the little not-as-cute-as-Wall-E robot up top there- wave, T.S.!) happened to fuse the universal selection controller and managed to get it stuck on Effect 37- which thankfully was "Creativity Contemplated".

I say "thankfully", because frankly, I love creativity and find it highly interesting to discuss. I also say "thankfully", because Effect 36 was "Bananas Bemoaned" and Effect 38 was "Ducks Disintegrated".

Now mind you, I'm sure we could have had a fun time watching Ducks go "phoomph!" for at least a few weeks, but frankly the whole concept would have been a dead horse (duck?) pretty quickly. As to bemoaning bananas, well, I'm not certain how to go about that for longer than a few hours at best.

So here we are then! I've tried to organize the blog into sections for your viewing pleasure (and my production nightmare). Let's take a tour of the areas, shall we?

In Reflections, I intend to engage your mind with interesting conversations on creativity in all of its forms. Stop for a minute- you're thinking of the obvious... painting, reading, dancing, writing, and so on. Did you ever consider that there is creativity in philosophy? Politics? Sports? In fact, most areas of life contain creativity. Therefore, be prepared- just about any topic could pop up in Reflections!

Next we have Wordcraft, your one-stop source for all things in regards to the process of creative writing. I'll discuss general writing concepts, share some other people's work on the web, and even try to find some great tips and tricks of the trade. From poetry to the great novel, we'll touch on a bit of everything. I'll also spotlight my own writing efforts on as consistent a basis as possible... and if you know writers, you'd know that "consistent" is not a keyword we recognize. If you are interested in writing, stop in to Wordcraft!

Last we have the fun brain-candy of Mindflow. Here we'll run through the jungle of creativity that is the internet and sample from its bountiful platter. Bring a machete, your sense of humor and your sense of awe- I'll have the most popular viral videos, incredible artwork and just about anything under the sun that tickles those creative juices until they spill all over. If you want to oooh and ahhh, stop by Mindflow.

So there we have it! Your tour is complete! Feel free to bond to a particular area, or sweep through the whole collection... there should be something for everyone interested in the contemplation of creativity!

On behalf of T.S., I once again welcome you to Effect 37 and hope you enjoy yourself!
